Frostan is committed to take all actions relating to climate and to carry a consciousness for the environment through:

We identify, assess, and comply with applicable laws, regulations, permits, and other obligations or requirements relating to waste management for both Frostan and our related business partners. Our policy is to develop, implement and maintain a 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle) program for waste where applicable and beneficial.

Standard waste management procedures

During food processing, organic waste is generated with a significant potential to pollute land, air, and water because of its high Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and sheer volume. We apply conventional and emerging technologies to manage food waste generated during processing and non-food waste resulting from our direct operations.

Recycling

Resource efficiency enables us to create more with less and to deliver greater value with less input, it simply means using the Earth's limited resources sustainably while minimizing impacts on the environment. To achieve a circular economy, organic by-products such as those from chicken and cattle are sold to small business owners around our production areas and in order to create more added value from our processing activities we are continuously studying ways to convert contaminating waste into either feed stuff or energy.

Resource efficiency

As a growing company in a developing country, Frostan prioritizes sustainable growth. Our goal is to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases to a safe level, with the use of environment-conscious machinery, and office designs with less need for power. To ensure proper usage of water, we have rainwater collectors.

Climatic action

According to the Tanzania Economic Update 17 report published by the World Bank, a growing share of Tanzanian women are now compensated employees, and the ratio of women to men in jobs paying wages and salaries rose from 0.35:1 in 2000 to 0.64:1 in 2019. To support this growth Frostan leads by example, we have dedicated ourselves to ensuring equal pay and opportunities for both men and women, implementing flexible work policies and supporting the progression and leadership opportunities for women.

Gender equality

One of our key goals is to bring about a positive impact on the community surrounding us. By working closely with the local authorities and community leaders at Iringa Ugewechanya, we completed a road repairing project and a bridge repairing project hence increasing safety and raising community standards.

Improving community infrastructure

In Tanzania, Frostan procures all its chicken and beef from out growers, these are local people around Dar es Salaam and Iringa. Recently, benefiting from a BIO technical assistance grant, a chicken out grower underwent intensive training in poultry farming. The training was presented by local poultry experts from the company Silver lands, who provided Frostan with all its day-old chicks and chicken feed for three stages of growth. Also in Tanzania, PPHL’s local suppliers include female entrepreneurs.

Working with local outgrowers

We are dedicated to building the capacity of our staff through training, such as life skills training for personal finance management and leadership training. Three leadership training courses were presented to Frostan staffing in late 2021, one each for senior management, middle management and staff, with monthly follow-up team wellness check-ins. The company has an MOU with Sokoine University in Morogoro from where it takes interns and mentors them, including through horizontal learning (rotating staff between facilities). The majority of interns are subsequently appointed.
